OK I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH YOU MUST BE EXTREMELY CAREFULL WHEN DISCHARGING EHT............... THAT OUT THE WAY YOU WILL NEED 2 X SCREWDRIVERS MINIMUM 12 INCHES LONG WITH WELL INSULATED HANDLES. MAKE SURE TV IS UNPLUGGED FROM MAINS, NOW LOOKING AT REAR OF TUBE YOU WILL SEE A METAL BRAIDED BAND GOING AROUND THE TUBE WHICH IS SECURED WITH SPRINGS TO TUBE CORNERS, NOW SLIDE BLADE OF 1 SCREWDRIVER UNDER BRAID BAND MAKING SURE METAL BLADE IS MAKING GOOD CONNECTION WITH BRAID, NEXT CAREFULLY SLIDE 2ND SCREWDRIVER UNDER EHT RUBBER CAP UNTIL IT HITS THE METAL CONNECTION IN THE CENTRE OF CAP NOW BRING SCREWDRIVER SHAFTS TOGETHER YOU WILL HEAR A CRACK AS THE ELECTRICITY RUNS DOWN SCREWDRIVER 2 IN TO SCREWDRIVER 1 INTO THE METAL BRAID WHICH IS CALLED AQUADAG, YOU MAY NEED TO REPEAT THIS 3 OR 4 TIMES WAITING 10 TO 20 SECONDS BETWEEN EACH DISCHARGE B4 REMOVING RUBBER EHT CAP..........******* REMEMBER ELECTRICITY CAN KILL*********** YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK********* IF IN DOUBT LEAVE WELL ALONE***********....

Chris is well versed in explaining the dangers of discharging the hv from the pic tube, however the method I use is just as safe and effective, same deal, use a long screwdriver with an insulated shaft though with a piece of insulated wire with `alligator` clips on each end. Connect one end to the `braided` wire around the tube and the other to a bare section of the screwdriver. Slide the screwdriver under the `suction` cap as mentioned by Chris, and you may hear a loud `snap` as the ht is discharged. this method is easier as you do not have to juggle two screwdrivers to get the same effect. TAKE CARE TO DISCHARGE AGAIN BEFORE RECONNECTING THE HT LEAD TO THE TUBE AS RESIDUAL VOLTAGE MAY REMAIN.

If you are only working on the non HT parts of the TV i.e. teletext chip would you still recomend discrarging the HT circuit in a modern TV or are they prettly well isolated?

A simple way, is unplugged the TV set & leave it alone for a least a week. Stay away from the "red wire" going to the picture tube, and give your self a lot of room at the back of the set.
